(The Straits Times) – The Malaysian government has warned against excessive use of micro-blogging sites like Facebook and Twitter, arguing that they could erode the country’s culture, a report said on Sunday.
Rais Yatim, the information and communication minister, said Muslims and other religious groups must be wary of the Internet as it was introduced by the West.
Rais Yatim is asking us to be wary of internet as it was introduced by the West. By that definition, the television should also be banned if not discouraged as its roots lie in the West. The radio(or wireless) too, whose use should be discouraged or banned as it was invented by Marconi.
Mobile phones, Nokia! to be exact is from Finland and is thus European and by that definition… Western. So are Intel microprocessors, because Intel has an R&D facility in Israel and some processors have distinctly Jewish sounding names like Nehalem, Merom and so forth.
But I fail to see how our culture can be eroded by the Internet. Rather, shouldn’t the internet be a way to spread OUR culture to the world? What sort of thinking is this?
Mr Rais said users must not be influenced by what they see and hear when using the Internet. ‘We must be strong in our belief and culture because the identity and image of our country depends on us,’ he said.
Then what are you asking us? Are we to believe every single thing our government tells us to believe? Sure you not ask us to put all of our faith in our government to lead us? With the current political and economic situation?
So then we must totally REJECT what we see and hear on the internet even when such that is seen, read, and heard are true facts?
So if what he’s saying is correct… then in MY belief, YOU ARE WRONG, MR MINISTER! So take your advice and shove it you know where!
