Went for lulz, got no lulz :(

by aoshi_88 on July 27th, 2008

Went to TAF for the lulz. I knew i wasn’t expecting much ever since their macross 25th Anniversary, which, let’s face it, not many people know of Macross anyway.

Overall:

Response was lukewarm. The crowd just wasn’t there. The event itself was rather poorly coordinated. Cosplay competition and artwork competition schedules were also changed just one hour before both competitions started. Bad stage lighting made it hard to see what was going onstage. Venue isn’t anything to shout about but the audio equipment was horrible. At times, you could hear the music from the back of the stage, and occassionaly it would be from the front. Even participants for “Guess-the-song” had trouble hearing the song they were supposed to guess.

Cosplay Competition:

Somewhat poorly executed. I had no understanding whatsoever of what was going on with some of the sketches. At one point, two cosplayers doing a skit didn’t say when their skit ended and the judges ended up being clueless as to whether it was over and done with or whether the drama was still going on.

1st Place: Dude from Final Fantasy 7. One of the Turks.

2nd Place: Can’t remember

3rd Place: Don’t remember either

Akiko as Chi from Chobits. She didn’t win though.

And i blame Linkin for causing me to miss the rest of the cosplay competition. Had to rush back to PJ to pick him up from the LRT station.

Here’s another kicker, TWO of the judges were none other than Aiko and Shin. So watch out people, we of /AS/ are in ur backyards, snoopin’ ur lolis.

Booths:

Didn’t have much of an interest in the booths but i did hang out most of the time at the TFM(Figure Mall) booth. These guys are the ones who do booth displays at major cons/events in Malaysia but within the peninsula. This year’s team saw the addition of Setsuna and Sai as participants contributing their own figurines to the display in addition to Kev, Valho, Aiko and dishwasher.

Exiled_Gundam trying to be moe, and not failing too badly either.

Tried to concentrate not on the figurine itself but the background. Focus Point set to the mirror you see at the background. Thanks to Empire23 for helping me with this.

Another shot at the TFM booth. Left to right; dishwasher, aiko, aiko’s pet sister, valho and kev.

Photography:

Learnt some good lessons from playing around with the lighting in the hall. Had to adjust my flash usage constantly. The ceiling height made it difficult to bounce light and the size of the hall itself made it kind of pointless to try and use the walls too. My home-made DIY diffuser, which didn’t work too well, wasn’t much of a help so i took it off early into the event. What i sorely need now is a proper diffuser. ;_; But that’s Rm85 and i got to wait until my next paycheck to get one.

Though even with a proper flash, some photos did turn out under-exposed and over-exposed. Seeing as i’m still new with the external flash, i’m still adjusting to it as i hadn’t had the chance to properly use the flash in a major event like this. More experience needed, but i’m still quite happy at how some of the shots turned out.

Dead, the guy with the scythe got third i believe and ichigo got second. Well I had fun as a cosplayer (it was my first time!) i guess if you went as a normal human it would’ve been rather boring. Guess organization and PR work needs improving for next year. Zenai, maybe i could be the EmCee XD just a thought lols
